China Railway Group (601390) is in negotiations to build a railway connecting Colombia’s Atlantic and the Pacific coasts, reports nbd.com.cn. The proposed construction scheme includes 7.6 billion US dollars financed by China Development Bank.

The railway will be able to transport a maximum of 40 million tons of goods from Colombia’s economic hinterland to the Pacific Ocean per year, with a focus on coal delivery to China.
Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos said that China has investigated the transportation and investment costs.

At present, a total of 27 nations worldwide are looking for China to build railways, while Chinese companies are increasingly inclined to build railways for transporting energy resources rather than supplying cheap labor abroad.

China imported more than 50 million tons of coal in 2009; however, the cost of imports for coastal cities is lower than that of transporting from North by rail or seas.

Colombia is world's fifth largest supplier of coal.

According to the new railway network expansion program unveiled in 2008, China will have 120,000-kilometer-long railway by 2020, of which 16,000 kilometers are dedicated passenger lines where trains could reach a speed of 200km/h and above.

"By 2012, about 12,000-13,000 kilometers long dedicated passenger lines will be put into operation and I believe our transportation capacity could increase dramatically. It will not be so hard to get a railway ticket then as it is now," Professor Li explained.

China is not only endeavoring to perfect its domestic rail transportation grid but also has an ambitious plan to cooperate with other countries to connect the Eurasia with high speed railway network.

In early March, Wang Mengshu, a senior consultant on China's domestic high-speed rail project, told Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post that China plans to extend its domestic high speed rails to Central, East and Southeast Asia and is in negotiations with relevant countries.

If the great plan could come true, the newly-built network will connect the current high-speed rail network in Europe, which means passengers will take only two days traveling from London to Beijing, according to British Newspaper the Daily Mail.

"Technically speaking, the plan is totally feasible. (With such a network), many (goods) could be transported via the high speed rail rather then relying on ocean shipping," said Li.

La Chine est les ressources naturelles canadiennes

Un autre exemple de la Chine qui investit (s'approprie?) dans les ressources naturelles mondiales; le cuivre canadien/équatorien dans le cas présent.

À noter, l'acquisition chinoise passe entre autres par une compagnie ferroviaire, China Railway Construction Corp.

The acquisition “is in line with the long-term strategy of the company,” Beijing-based China Railway Construction said in the statement. The company “has added development of mineral resources as one of its principal operations,” it said.

Last Train Home - Un film à voir

Il y a de ces thèmes qui sont universels. La migration des ouvriers chinois, au-delà de la pauvreté et des conditions de travail, en est un et c'est ce que j'avais évoqué ici.

Le réalisateur Lixin Fan a filmé pendant trois ans les membres de cette famille du Sichuan qui sont déchirés par cette migration. Le résultat est un film poignant, Last Train Home, qui, si on oublie l'environnement, aurait bien pu se dérouler n'importe où en occident.

Un film à voir.

Among the possibilities, California wants to link San Francisco with L.A. via a high-speed link. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wants the private sector to get into the act, proposing a high-speed spur to connect Las Vegas with L.A.

Maybe, after environmental reviews are finished and eminent domain issues settled, those lines will be built. Meanwhile, IBM opened its new global high-speed-rail innovation center last month.

Les Chinois et les trains

Sans contraintes régulatoires comme en Amérique du Nord et sans limites de budget, la Chine construit dans le domaine ferroviaire.

Construction on the 29.68-billion-yuan (US$4.34 billion) Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway started yesterday at Fengjing area in Shanghai.

Construction started in July last year on the 300km Shanghai-Nanjing rail line at a cost of 39.46 billion yuan. A 251km rail link between Nangjing and Hangzhou is also under construction at a cost of 31.3 billion yuan.

The second one is the Lijiang-Shangri La Railway with a total length of 161km. The interprovincial railway starts from the Lijiang Railway Station and will route through Tiger Leaping Gorge and Xiaozhongdian, scenic spots in Yunnan province.
